For over a decade, Select Ready Foods has supplied the foodservice industry with convenient, high quality products that meet the most selective tastes and budgets.

In 1997, President and co-founder Brad Shapka realized that chain restaurants had unfulfilled requirements when it came to maintaining food consistency from one location to the next. Discovering this niche lead Shapka to develop Select Ready Foods. That same year, the company leased 5,000 square feet in the west end of Edmonton to start up its first operation. With the introduction of the Original Dry Rib, the Select brand was built throughout Western Canada.

Over the years, Select expanded its product line to include Sweet & Sour Pork, Honey Garlic Pork and Ginger Beef. As a result of innovative new product development the company’s reputation for manufacturing high quality, value added pork and beef products quickly soared throughout Western Canada.

In 2001, Nilsson Brothers Inc. became the major shareholder in Select Ready Foods, and in 2003, the company renovated a facility with more than 20,000 square feet, which was opened in November of 2004. In 2007, Select leased a suite at the Agrivalue Processing Business Incubator in Leduc for the purpose of developing fully cooking beef, pork and chicken products. Access to the oven and related infrastructure enabled the company to grow and assisted in the commercialization of new products – opening the doors to new markets. Select quickly recognized that lifestyle changes, eating habits and consumer consciousness were creating an increase in demand for products prepared in an oven; offering added value and healthier alternatives to customers that weren’t satisfied with existing partially cooked deep fried, breaded protein.

Select Ready Foods employees realized that their products would also benefit many Canadian households – much like they had done for the foodservice industry. On-the-go lifestyles often limit the ability of modern families to prepare delicious and nutritious meals from scratch. To the delight of Canadian consumers, the Select line-up of restaurant quality meals, appetizers and main dishes are on the shelves of grocery stores across the country.
